Tussar occupies a very special place in Kolkata and it is produced on a large scale in many places of West Bengal. Now a days Kantha stitched tussar saree has gone very famous all over India and also in abroad. Quality of Tussar silk saree is very fine. It is very smooth in nature and is appreciated as a cottage industry by everybody all over the country.
Dhakai jamdani saree is another known type of Kolkata saree which is chosen by everybody. In West Bengal saree hub, this saree is the most likable one, which has a wide range of colors and designs. Mughal artisans had framed this at the Mughal period and it has been continuing to be on high demand till today.
Baluchari saree is basically a product of West Bengal. Kolkata people has picked up a special liking for it and now it is available in Kolkata market in abundance. This is basically of thick silk with difference designs woven on it. Baluchari saree has a border which is again designed very nicely. These days stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata is woven on the pallus of Baluchari sarees which shows the deeply rotated tradition and culture of India. Besides this there is an amazing variety in Baluchari saree like Minakari, Swarnachari and so on. Murshidabad is also another place for Baluchari saree but the silk used here is of different texture. This saree has a wide range of color which may be chosen by the users irrespective of their age.
Banarasi sarees are originally a product of Banaras. It has got a remarkable place in Kolkata. Many types of Banarasi sarees are available in the showrooms. Banarasi sarees are gorgeous in color and it has zari work on its base and pallu. There are many types of it like Pashmina, Tanchoi, Zardausi and so on. Generally, a Bengali wedding is tagged with Banarasi saree as the bride wears a red Banarasi on her wedding night.
Kolkata is another hub of sarees like South India and it has its own tradition and culture.
