History of the Net Sarees

The actual origin of net sarees are not know but the first trace was found in the pre-Mughal period. The net material was mainly used by the people of the Western countries, but later on the Indians have also started to make sarees with this material. During the British Empire these sarees were worn in order to cope with the fashion styles of the British women. Previously, it was used for making veils and dupattas, but later on the designers understood its importance in the field of sarees.

Material of Net sarees

Net Sarees are made up of a see-through transparent material. It is that type of a fabric in which the yarns are knotted at the intersections to create a pattern of tiny holes. The characteristics of the material can vary from being durable to not durable depending on the yarn used to make it. Jute and Tissu Silk are one of the common fabrics used to make the motif of the saree.

It is a hexagonal mesh made from the yarns of silk and nylon which makes it a bit stiffer yet being thin and transparent. It is specicially used in manufacturing bridal attitres.

Bobbinet:

This is also made with the help of hexagonal mesh which enables the net to be thin and transparent. Inspite of being thin, these sarees are availble with stones on the motif.

Filet Net:

This is made up of square mesh and the holes that are formed therefore are of hexagonal shape.

Fishnet:

This type of net resembles a fisherman's net and is tied into large and irregularly shapes with large opening in the yarn.

The specialty of Net sarees are the thick borders with a lot of embroidery, zari and lace work on them. Some sarees have plane and simple or at times minimum designs on the body while some are pretty colourful and gorgeous with a lot of designs and patterns on them.
